National Campaign Launched to Highlight Fair Housing Month

Gov. Brownback, KHRC, HUD and Others Celebrate 45th Anniversary of Fair Housing Act

TOPEKA  - In celebration of National Fair Housing Month, Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC), the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Housing and Credit Counseling Services, Inc., and municipalities across the state are working to educate the public and housing providers about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act. The landmark civil rights legislation, which was passed in 1968, makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale or rental of housing based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, familial status or disability.

On April, 19th, Governor Sam Brownback will host a proclamation signing ceremony to highlight the Fair Housing Act's 45th anniversary. "Everyone deserves the opportunity to find a safe place to live," said Gov. Brownback. "Only through raising awareness, continued cooperation and support of all Kansans can we remove barriers to fair housing," said Brownback.

At the national level, HUD has rolled out a media campaign titled "Fair Housing Is Your Right. Use It."  The campaign features English, Spanish, and Chinese radio and print public service advertisements (PSAs) that highlight examples of actions which violate the Fair Housing Act. Each PSA encourages anyone who experiences discrimination to call HUD's housing discrimination hotline (1-800-669-9777), contact a local fair housing agency, or visit HUD's fair housing website: www.HUD.gov/fairhousing.

New this year, HUD has also unveiled the first housing discrimination mobile application. Developed by the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) and Hewlett Packard (HP), the app uses the latest technology to provide the public with a quick and easy way to learn about their housing rights and to file housing discrimination complaints. Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc. of Topeka (HCCI) works to teach tenants about fair housing rights and is offering a free "Self-Sufficiency Renter Preparation" class on Tuesday, April 30th in Lawrence. To register for the Renter Preparation class, contact Anju Mishra of HCCI at 785-749-4224, or email amishra@hcci-ks.org.

All throughout the month of April, many Kansas municipalities adopt ordinances and issue proclamations promoting the importance of fair housing. For a list of cities and counties that have issued fair housing proclamations so far, check out the right column on this page.

Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) is a self-supporting, public corporation that administers federal housing programs on behalf of the State of Kansas. KHRC also oversees the state's Fair Housing Team which consists of representatives from the Kansas Human Rights Commission, Salina Human Relations Commission, Urban League of Kansas and other organizations. The Team seeks to inform housing providers and consumers about fair housing rights and responsibilities, encourage state-funded housing providers to promote fair housing choice and enlist decision-makers to advance the cause of fair housing.
